Exhaust gas purification is a crucial process in environmental technology and the automotive industry that serves to reduce harmful emissions from various sources, especially from combustion engines, and minimize environmental pollution. Basics of exhaust gas purification:

Exhaust gases produced by the combustion of fossil fuels or other chemical processes often contain harmful substances such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), particulates and other pollutants. Exhaust gas purification aims to reduce or eliminate these pollutants before they are released into the atmosphere.

Exhaust gas purification technologies:

Catalysts: Catalysts are substances that accelerate chemical reactions without being consumed themselves. In automobiles, catalysts such as the three-way catalytic converter are used to convert CO, NOx and HC into non-toxic gases.

Particle filters: Particle filters are widely used in diesel vehicles to filter soot particles from the exhaust gases. These particulate filters can effectively trap particle sizes in the micrometer range.

SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction): SCR systems use urea solutions to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. This technology is often used in trucks and marine engines.

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR): In this method, part of the exhaust gases are fed back into the combustion process to reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides.

Electric vehicles: Electric vehicles do not produce exhaust gases at the tailpipe, which leads to a significant reduction in environmental impact.

Challenges and future prospects:

Emission control technologies have contributed significantly to the reduction of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. However, challenges remain, particularly with regard to the development of cost-effective and sustainable technologies. Research is focusing on advanced exhaust gas purification systems that are even more efficient and environmentally friendly.
